The Problem Isn't You. It's How It Was Explained to You.

You're at the DMV computer and the question asks what turns the S-cam. Pushrod, slack adjuster, brake chamber: all three sound right.

The manual explains it in one long paragraph: air enters the chamber, pushes the rod, moves the slack adjuster, twists the cam. Read as a sentence, four moving parts blur into one.

S-cam sequence: air in chamber, pushrod out, slack adjuster twists cam, shoes hit drum.

In the book, the S-cam brake is one page: the chamber, the pushrod, the slack adjuster and the cam drawn in the order they move, with arrows until the shoes press against the drum.

Same with the governor, the spring brakes, brake lag, the blue and red lines and the 7-step check: each one has its own page.

You see what moves what. You answer the question, and later explain it in the yard, without going back to the manual.

  • You walk into the DMV still unsure
Air brake systems use compressed air to operate the brakes. The air compressor pumps air into the storage tanks. A governor controls when the compressor pumps air into the tanks: when tank pressure rises to the cut-out level, the compressor stops pumping, and when it falls to the cut-in level, pumping resumes. When the driver depresses the brake pedal, air travels through the foot valve to the brake chambers, where it acts upon the slack adjusters and applies the foundation brakes.

One Page, One Topic, All Clear

Think of it this way:

You're in the yard, engine running, and the examiner says: "Walk me through your air brake check." Seven steps, and each one has its number.

In the book you flip to the 7-step page and see the gauge drawn with every number marked: cut-out around 125, warning before 55 or 60, spring brakes between 20 and 45, cut-in around 100.

Brake lag at 55 mph on dry pavement: about 32 extra feet before the air brakes grab.

Same with the S-cam brake, brake lag at 55 mph, the blue and red lines and the vehicle inspection order: each one on its own page.

CDL Air Brakes Illustrated is 8 parts and 61 topics, all drawn, and at the end all the air brake numbers on one page, the pairs people mix up and a trace-the-air self-test.

What you see drawn, you don't have to memorize.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it for me if I've never driven a truck, or if I already drive one?

Both. It starts from zero with the whole air system in one drawing. If you already drive, it's a quick way to review the numbers before the test or to take off the air brake restriction.

Where does the content come from, and does it work for my state?

From the state CDL manuals, which follow the AAMVA model manual, and from FMCSA rules (49 CFR Parts 383, 392 and 393). The air brakes section is built on that shared model. Where a detail can differ, like a low air warning set by the manufacturer, the page tells you to check your state manual.

Is this official material? Why pay if the state manual is free?

No. It's an independent illustrated study book. Your state's CDL manual is free, it's the official reference, and you should keep using it. This book doesn't replace it: it draws what the manual explains in paragraphs, puts the psi numbers in a box on each page and keeps the same order every time, so you can review it in minutes.

Does it replace ELDT or my CDL school?

No. ELDT is required by federal rules and only a registered training provider can certify it: this book gives no certificate and doesn't count toward ELDT. Driving can't be learned from a book either. It helps you understand and review what you study there.

Are the practice questions the ones on the test?

No. They're written for this book, in the style of the knowledge tests, and each answer points to the page where it's drawn.

When and how do I get it?

As a PDF by email, at the address you enter at checkout. The 2 bonus books come the same way.

Do I have to pay every month?

No. It's a one-time payment.

Can I have it on paper?

Yes. Print it at home or at a print shop and keep it in the cab.

How does the refund work?

You have 30 days. We refund everything if the file won't open, if the book isn't what you see on this page, if you were charged twice or if the email doesn't arrive: just email us.
